Using External datastore (DB) with github Enterprise

TL;DR

Github Enterprise does not allow for the use of an external database.

I was wondering if Github Enterprise allows us to utilize an external database (such as PostgreSQL) instead of using it’s internal datastore that ships with the AWS AMI image.

I was unsuccessful in ‘googling’ and the response on the IRC channel (#github) was ‘ask support’. Therefore, I opened ticket with Github Enterprise support and got back the reply:

“We do not allow for the use of an external database in Github Enterprise[…].”

The reason I asked was it would have impacted on my Github Enterprise HA/DR strategy so now having found this out, I would stick to the HA strategy offered by Github themselves – use 2 Github Enterprise servers in replication mode.
